Intercultural Skills
of the Modern Engineer

S TUD E N T- E M P L O Y E R D E B AT E

On April 28, 2015 the tenth edition of a deba-
te with employers took place at Poznań Uni-
versity of Technology. This year the title of the
debate was "Intercultural Skills of the Modern
Engineer". The event was organized by the Centre of Lan-
guages and Communication and was attended by both Po-
lish and foreign students. Poznań University of Technology
was represented by Rector, professor Tomasz Łodygowski,
professor Franciszek Tomaszewski, Ph.D., D.Sc., Eng., De-
an of Faculty of Machines and Transportation, professor
Magdalena Wyrwicka, Ph.D., D.Sc., Eng. Dean of Faculty of
Engineering Management and professor Krzysztof Wisłoc-
ki, Ph.D.,Vice Dean for Science and International Relations,
Faculty of Machines and Transportation.

The following companies from Wielkopolska region accep- counting Center, Justyna Król, Expert, Pearson Education,
ted the invitation and attended the debate: Jens Ocksen, John Lennon, Research and Development Manager, King-
Head of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Poznan, span Environmental, and Anna Łobaczewska, Human Reso-
Karolina Florczyk, Employer Branding Specialist, Man Ac- urces Manager, Solaris. Among the invited guests were also
Corinne Matthews, a Fulbright scholar and a CLC lecturer,
and Robert Bartkowiak, Head for Education, Students’ Go-
vernment.

After greeting the PUT authorities and the panelists, dr.
Liliana Szczuka-Dorna, CLC Director, began the debate by
giving a presentation on Intercultural Communication.

Following the presentation, the guests answered a num-
ber of questions asked by the debate moderators. First,
Jens Ocksen, Volkswagen Poznan discussed problems
connected with multicultural communication and how
they influence project development, signing contracts and
negotiations in his company, highlighting the problems
of multicultural awareness and empowerment. Next, Ka-
